A Brief Introduction to Guilin　Medical　University

　　There is an old saying of “A paradise like Guilin’s hills and Li River of dreamland”. Guilin, known as the city where “the hills and rivers are the finest under heaven”, has gestated and nourished a great many beautiful and moving legends for thousands of years…Guilin Medical University (GLMU), born and grown up here, is a bright pearl among the marvelous mountains and beautiful rivers, as it were. It is trying to demonstrate its harmonious and simple splendour to the world by taking advantage of the formations and the nimbus of the surrounding hills and rivers. 　　GLMU is a university directly under the administration of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Founded in 1935 from the former Guilin Senior Nurse Midwifery School, GLMU was upgraded and renamed as Guilin Medical School in 1958. Approved by the former State Education Committee in 1987, the school was upgraded to a college for medical undergraduates. In 2006, GLMU was authorized to conduct the graduate education and was evaluated and accredited an “Excellent University” by the Ministry of Education of China. In a word, Guilin Medical University gives priority to clinical medicine and also integrates pharmacy, biotechnology, medical assay technology as well as Nursing into a multi-major harmoniously-developed university with stronger comprehensive power to run a university and also with a definite influence in and out of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

　　This university has 10 dependent colleges (faculties), including College of Basic Medicine, College of Clinical Medicine, College of Clinical Medicine at Nanxi Shan，the Second College of Clinical Medicine, the Third College of Clinical Medicine, College of Pharmacy, College of Biotechnology, College of Nursing and College of Further Education, together with 3 teaching departments including Department of Human Social Science, Department of Foreign Languages, and Department of Physical Education. Additionally, there is one immediate affiliated hospital, 4 non-immediate affiliated hospitals and 21 teaching hospitals.

　　The university has a sound-diversified and highly-qualified team of teachers. There are 530 professional teachers, of whom, 199 have high professional titles and 304 have Master’s degrees or above. In addition, there are 101 supervisors of postgraduates and 3 Ph.D supervisors. 7 teachersgain special subsidy from the State Council, 4 are granted the honored title “The National Excellent Teacher”, 2 teachers are praised and chosen as Guangxi “Distinguished Teachers” in the colleges and universities, and four other teachers are the second-leveled candidates of “The Talent Projects ” in Guangxi.

　　At present, the university has five specialties: Clinical Medicine, Pharmacy, Biotechnology, Nursing, and Medical Examination, of which, Clinical Medicine is the key one in Guangxi. We have enrolled students from 18 provinces and regions in China. Currently, students of various types in our university have reached over 10,000.

　　After more than seventy years of construction and development, the scale of the university has consistently been enhanced and elevated with each passing year. In turn, the university is getting stronger and at the same time, the teaching quality is being improved steadily. Furthermore, the university has been cultivating increasing numbers of practical medical talents. Over the recent three years, the proportion of undergraduate students taking up a medical-related occupation has been being retained over 93 %, making positive contributions to medical care and to the health service of Guangxi, the country and the world as well. Definitely, the fame and reputation of the university is being increased year after year. Therefore, the university is becoming more widely accepted by the society, and it gradually paves its own unique way to run a medical university at the accepted standards.
